Swaines Reef Report September 2006 After 17 months of planing and organising our trip to Swans reef it was finally the day to go 13-9-2006 we left Sutherland at 5.00am in a bus to Sydney Airport then Brisbane, Rockhampton, bus from Rockhampton to Roslyn Bay Yeppoon we were on the MV CARLO about 6 hours after leaving Sutherland everyone was exited the MV CARLO is 60ft long three stories high and weighs 90 tonne I was pleased every think had gone so smooth, as I had been on the same trip in 2001 the gear we had would make any tackle shop owner pleased to call it stock, armed with all our gear, excitement of the unknown and anticipation of what laid ahead, we met Karl our skipper who advised us that we were not leaving port for a day or two because of the condition's everyone's jaw hit the ground, we were all very disappointed the wind was about 30 to 40 knots the sea was 5 meter swell we stayed in port for a day and a half and Karl decided to head North to Port Clinton, about an 8 hour trip because of the conditions once there the excitement of the trip grew as two dory's were lowered into the water then there was a scramble for what gear to take Craig, Sean, Chris and Dale went for plastic's and lures and were dropped on a beach the area is so pristine that you think no one has ever been there before and, the rest of us run about in the dory's with a few different species on board cod, queen fish, coral trout and one strange looking trevally, the boy's on the beach had a ball with the plastic's with some very big flathead, silver bream and black bream that was exciting and after a few beer's the reality of what had been caught, we had waited so long to be up here and we caught flathead and bream we could have caught at home, the next day Karl decided we would head East for 6 hours to Bell Cay hoping that the conditions would change we reached Bell Cay about 10.30 that night very little beer had been consumed over the first three days because of the rough conditions, we left Bell Cay about 7.am and headed for Swans another 6 hours of wind and swell the trip had been pretty uncomfortable, until we reached the protection of the Great Barrier Reef 280km east of Yeppoon , it is something you have to see for your self white cap's all along the outer edge of the reef and calm water where we were still with a bit of wind but continually decreasing to a breeze now the fishing started there were Spanish mackerel from 7 to 23kg coral trout to 4.kg spangled emperor to 5.5kg red emperor to 4.5kg sweet lip to 3kg golden trevally giant trevally shark's shark mackerel parrotfish red jewfish triggerfish Mack tuna fish every where it turned out to be a fantastic trip our members were John Hewitt, Mathew Hewitt, Clint Hewitt, Ray Stares, Daniel Stares, Harry Thompson, Dale Gardner, Craig Pollard, Sean Filetti, Chris Sjblom, Josh Noakes, Matt Mono. in the end a good trip was had by all and we all bought back two box's of fish each.
August 5th & 6th, 2006 14 Fisho's weighed fish in. H/C Winner Harry Thompson with 140.5 pts. H/C Best Fish Glenn Simpson Rainbow Trout .46kg and 52pts. the condition's in the river and bay systems were very slow to dead as far as fishing goes with Trout winning the comp there were a few Bream, Trevally, Luderick, Whiting. As in June the FCA Charter boat's were cancelled again this month due to the weather again wind's s/w 35 to 40 knot's swell to 4m this put about 24 fishoe's out of the comp on Sunday due to condition's on the day. The Mulloway have been very slow as well we haven't seen any for a while.
July 8th & 9th, 2006 12 Fisho's presented fish to the weigh Master Winner of the comp was Keith Palmer with a good bag of Luderick 381pts. Runner up was Dave Sharp with 318pts. Jewfish that had chocked on a blackfish...

The fisho's have found that the Mulloway have been very quiet over the last 2 month's non have crossed the scale's since April, and Darren Parker ( fess ) is happy for it to stay that way until the 4 December 2006 !! not likley !! Darren, Keanie is after that 50grams you beat him by in April so don't get to comfortable in front of the fire at home on those cold winter nights. Sunday 26 March was the first round of the WDFCA Charterboat comp Woronora ( A ) Team top scored with 100% and the ( B ) came third with 80% this comp is the best three outings out of four so we can drop an outing due lack of fish or bad weather. Sunday 11 June was the second round WDFCA Charter boat comp we cancelled this outing due to the weather conditions predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology and the advice of Peter Sayer of (Bianca Deep Sea Charters) Ray Stares the President of our club Daniel Stares who is also a Charterboat skipper and myself know what it is like when the weather changes and you are caught in it, our concern is for the safety of our 24 member's who fish these outing's we have two WDFCA Charterboat outing's to go 6th August and 5th November still plenty of time to make sure we keep the Shield. THE DAY AT JAMBEROO As 21-5-2006 was the closing date for the booking for JAMBEROO it is now closed and booked, I will put a list of people who are going on the notice board in the next few week's.

As May competition is also the the Harry Thompson ( Brass Monkey ) trip to Oberon it get's ! *_*_*_* ! cold up there at this time of the year, Harry organises the bait from Interstate for this comp believe it or not !!!! MAGGOT'S !!!! he told me" you can get any flavour you want" Harry also organises an Interstate competition the, NAFAH notafishermansasehole, fished by the THOMPSON CLAN from New South Wales and the MURPHY CLAN fron Victoria, the competition has been running since 1706, the trophy for this comp is 2m x 1m with on mention of the MURPHY CLAN, over the year's the MURPHY CLAN have tried to devise a plan to cross the river to New South Wales to learn the secret's of the THOMPSON CLAN but, our quarantine law's have stopped them from crossing the river, with this in mind the THOMPSON CLAN on the ( BRASS MONKEY ) trip laying back on the banks of the beautiful Oberon river, about lunch time in 1 degree heat, Harry bumped his beer witch spilt into his container of interstate bait and the Bloody MURPHY CLAN appeared from the container, lead by King Peter and Prince Jame's, they might be able to hold their breath, but they cant hold their beer, the THOMPSON CLAN were surrounded by King Peter and Prince Jame's the secret THOMPSON CLAN call went out to new clan member Bill Moon, where's ?? the net !! in no time at all in no time at all Bill was back with enough net's to apprehended the river jumpers they were photographed with stolen fish and sent home.

Best Female Junior Ashleigh Johnston 31pts Best Male Junior Ben Tsui 135.5pts We had fisho's scattered up and down the coast due to the school holiday's the weather was nice but cool just right for Mulloway this comp has taken the pressure off some other species as the nite fisho's are attempting to raise the bar every month, it has been quiet a few years since we have seen any Mulloway weighed at our competition's so far this year there has been twelve go over the scales but that's not all that have been caught, on the Saturday nite of the comp when some one catches a Mulloway then the phone call's start between Glenn, Bruce, Dale, Craig, Barry, John, Bill, Darren, Dave and who else is out on the nite in the comp as to what length fish was just bought on board and the catch and release being's so allot fish are let go, the best fish have came from the George's river so far the Hacking hasn't produced a big one yet the estimated length to beat now is 98cm estimated weight is around 6kg uncleaned. John Hewitt.
FISHO'S ‘V’ THE REST OF THE WORLD Sunday 9th April at Prince Edward Park With a beautiful day and a light breeze blowing it was the perfect day for cricket. Bruce Powney captain of the ROTW squad prepared a pitch that was just right for his spin attack. After the toss (Barry Johnston) Fisho's team captain , sent his side into bat .This was a clever decision as most of his key batsmen would be three sheets to the wind after lunch and only good for boundary fielding positions at the end of the day. This was the master stroke that won the day if you ask Barry.? Now Bruce Powney was stacking his team early with ringin’s from far and wide to create his magic 29. The Brandt Brothers , the Morgans ,Lamberts, Campbells, Hydes and Luschwitz just to name a few all performed there best for there captain, as did all the juniors/ladies. Now the fisho's team had some impressive talent in its ranks. Tracey, Rose, Amber and Gail, with juniors Brock, Jake, Ethan, Ashleigh & Timothy Brandt all wielding the willow against the ROTW attack causing Bruce field position nightmares. So after a hard fought day the Fisho's 120 runs was just too big a chase for the ROTW side. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the day a success. SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR. B.Johnston. (VP)

March 25th and 26th 2006 36 Fisho's weighed a variety of fish on Sunday from Gurnard to a nice Mulloway. H/C Winner John Hewitt 578.5pts. H/C Best Fish John Hewitt with a Gurnard 1.260kg 101pts. Again the weather was pretty good for a fishing comp weekend with a good range of fish Whiting, Bream, Flathead, Leatherjacket, Trevally, Kingfish, Salmon, Luderick, Drummer and one very nice Mulloway that weighed 5.140kg caught by Glenn Keane who's T shirt say's it all. With a new comp leader, others tried on the weekend but there was only one success story. It was quiet a nice story to how Bruce Stone ended up with Glenn's house keys I'm sure the story will be told on presentation nite, and also how some clown nearly fell out the back of a charter boat. If that wasn't bad enough Glenn Simpson happened to be on the boat as well so for the three people in the shire that didn't know it really did happen thanks Glenn. Special mention to the three lady's that fished on the FCA Charter boat team on Sunday Michelle Elliott, Darlene Andrews, Laurie Johnston, we fished in 138 meters of water that is a hard day's fishing for any one well done lady's. There were 8 junior's with fish Kieran Watson on the FCA Charter boat he is our Junior Champion for 2005 in the photo's Kieran is holding up some of the chinamen leatherjacket's he caught on the charter boat. Sunday 2-4-2006 was the first round of Woronora V Narrellan Fishing club that was fished out of Port Hacking on Bianca with Brian Dorsman of Dorso's Deep Sea Fishing Charters it was a nice day on the water. The team from Woronora :- Barry Johnston, Harry Thompson, John Hewitt, Ray Stares, Steve Ilett. From Narellan Bill, Neil, Ted, Emma, John. Emma who would be 8 or 9 year's old, Barry took it on him self show Emma what to do if you had too much to eat the nite before you go out on a charter boat the noise he was making sounded like Jabba The Hut trying to get into the boat, the thing's Woronora fisho's will do to entertain the junior's, Harry suffered from a little bit of Wharf sickness before we started all for the junior's good on ya!!! boy's, I think Barry and Harry's little ploy lead Narrellan to think we were 2 fisho's down but we beat them again the best fish Another nice reddie. Woronora 112pts Narrellan 78pts. John Hewitt
Presentation Night 2006 Presentation Night on the 11-2-2006 went on very well with alot of happy, excited junior's and the same with the senior's. We can only go by the number of member's of all age's that turn up at the presentation and those who are receiving Certificate's or trophy's as to the success of the Fishing Club. The hall is licensed to carry 150 people we have always been very close to that number and to see that many members there on the night makes all the work through the year by the committee all worthwhile. To mention everyone who makes the night a success wouldn't be easy as the preparation for the night is taken up by Ray and Karen Stares with food, trophies, a watch for every junior who weighed a fish in, plus Glenn, Gail & Amber Keane and John who signs old and new members in on the night and Gail organised quite a variety of mixed salad's with other members of the club Maude ,Liz, Rose, Laurie, Trish, Tracy, Michelle, Ann, Peggy, Mrs Parker, Debbie, Les, Bruce, John. Ray, Barry, Sean, Gabe all MC with the presentation of certificates, trophies. I know that I haven't remembered every one but it was a great nite. Open Champion Dale Gardner Ladies Champion Denise Pavitt Junior Champion Kerian Watson John Hewitt
February 25th & 26th 2006
47 Fisho's kept Glenn Kean busy at the scale's with 276 fish being weighed.
H/C Winner Warren Coleman with 778pts H/C Best fish Mike Brandt : Drummer 1.38kg 86pts 13 Junior's weighed fish and 8 Ladies, This comp was also LADIES VS. MEN Charter Boat Classic, the men are finally starting to realise that they can beat the Ladies after a few year's of what seemed to be a hopeless task to beat the Ladies this year the men came up with a brilliant Idea let's put some bait on the hook's and drop them over the side of the boat and to there surprise it worked" great tactic boy's. Ladies 1061pts Men 3424pts Mixed in with all of this is the Mulloway comp there was a big effort put in by the late nite fisho's but no Mulloway this month if you go to our Home page Directory click on Fishing, Tips, Notes & Articles you will find the fish of the month for January is Mulloway it has some helpful hint's on how to catch them and what to do when you do, other than that you could search the shire for a bloke by the name of ( WOODIE ) who recently caught a Mulloway just over a meter long in Gymea Bay on a hand line while fishing for bream, the only hint that I could give you is it's near Elsmere rd. John Hewitt
January 28th & 29th 2006 We had 38 fisho's weigh fish in. It was totally full on with the start of the Mulloway fish off plus we had so many new face's both senior and junior's it was impossible to keep track of what was going on. H/C Winner Ray Stares 441pts. H/C Best fish Ashley Caruthers Drummer 2.42kg 151pts. Our Ladies and junior's were out in force nice to see for our first comp of the year. Bill Moon : Mulloway 2.42kg Glenn Brown : Bream 0.760kg The weather was good for the weekend, this competition was also the start of the Mulloway fish off and there is quiet allot of interest with 20 members singed up. Bill Moon from Gabe's Bait and Tackle at Gymea had the best on the weekend of 2.420kg. so far he is the Mulloway comp leader. There were four Mulloway weighed in also Bream, Trevally, Whiting, Salmon, Tailor, Flathead, Drummer, Blackfish, Kingfish. Our web site was one year old on the 14-1-2006 it has become a very popular source of information, report's, stories and photograph's. Our Web Manager Tracy Gardner who tried some of the advice she has been uploading to the web site and found that It work's, sorry I didn't get any photo's of your fish Tracy. (I think the mystery bream on the photo page, the one in the scales might be mine - Tracy) John Hewitt |
